“Citizens Rising” is a riveting, exhilarating exploration of how new media and old are changing the world. Beautifully written and a must-read for anyone concerned about not just the ‘tech’ but the broader context of journalism today.”

–Andrea Mitchell, NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent

“David Hoffman has written a stirring book. He shows how digital technology grants a voice to citizens, threatens the most brutal dictators, and, however unevenly, promises a better tomorrow.”

–Ken Auletta, Media Columnist, The New Yorker

“David Hoffman has written a sweeping history of media and citizen power. It makes a compelling case for independent media and access to information for all. A must read for those who care about information.”

–Tara Sonenshine, former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy

“Citizen Rising is a series of fascinating dispatches from the frontlines of efforts to establish independent media around the world. David Hoffman is a true visionary; a radical thinker with an uncanny ability to see into the future, a knack for skewering conventional wisdom, and a passion for spreading the gospel that access to free, fair and accurate information is as essential to human progress.

–Chris Turpin, Executive Producer, NPR’s “All Things Considered”

From the fall of the Soviet Union to the Arab Spring to today’s continuing conflicts, media have played a decisive role in political affairs across the globe—driving the revolutionary changes shaping today’s new world. This is the first book presenting a comprehensive look at the emergence of media as a primary actor, and not merely an observer, of global affairs.

As founder of Internews, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to information access and independent media, David Hoffman has had a backstage pass to many of the seminal world political upheavals in recent years. In these pages we see how media have been used for good and bad—to trigger genocide, but also to effectively prevent conflict, facilitate free elections, expose corruption, promote nation-building, provide critical information amid natural disasters, and bring about massive social change such as free education and women’s rights. With the rise of digital technology, the power of media to intervene in global affairs is in the hands of everyone—including you. This book examines media’s historic impact and offers a roadmap to the future.

Citizens Rising Independent Journalism and the Spread of Democracy eBook David Hoffman Reviews

A series of fascinating dispatches from the front lines of efforts to establish independent media around the world. David Hoffman is a true visionary
David Hoffman has dedicated decades of his career to the vision of media development as an empowering tool for the information poor. His book captures his passion and takes us across the globe from Kabul to Cairo. While the notion of media development being essential seems obvious to many of us, too often it's poorly understood or neglected. Hoffman makes a very strong and convincing case as to its importance. I am really pleased this unique book is now available and accessible.
Citizens Rising came alive in my hands. I felt as if I were in Afghanistan going far beyond the headlines to learn about the people, culture and how old and new media are at the heart of change. The book takes the reader to the earliest planning stages of the Arab Spring. We meet the activists, their families and experience their fears and courage. The chapter on Burma was especially current and enlightening. David Hoffman's superb writing style transported me to the Burmese newsrooms to meet the journalists euphoric with the abolishment of government censorship. The final chapter on China was especially insightful on the future of media freedom with sourcing from those in the new media at the top of their game.

Citizens Rising breaks new ground. This is the first book that speaks to the power of media to change the world and Hoffman is the perfect person to tell the story. Having founded the non-profit media development sector 30+ years ago he's traveled the world from Russia to Yugoslavia, Kenya to China. Hoffman has done his homework with Citizens Rising and tells a riveting story. Kudos to the CUNY Journalism Press for sharing Citizens Rising with all of us.
David Hoffman began his career not as a journalist but as a political organizer and activist. This goes a long way toward explaining why "Citizens Rising" reads more like an adventure story than a conventional history.

"Citizens Rising" begins in the Kremlin during the Cold War and follows the story of the worldwide media-driven struggle for democracy up to the present day. As one of the first and most influential of the citizen diplomats, Hoffman has had a front row seat on--and a hand in--events that are reshaping our world.

This is a book for those who believe that issues of war and peace are too important to be left to politicians and diplomats. By taking a road less traveled, Hoffman's life shows how visionary individuals, operating without portfolio, can nonetheless catalyze political and social transformation. Read it not only to understand the indispensable role of journalism in the spread of democracy, but also to see how the infectious, can-do enthusiasm of one individual can bend the arc of history.
Amazing story, told in easy to understand style. A description of man's ability to change the world, one idea at a time.
This book is extremely well written. However I do NOT understand how you can go from page 32 to page 65 continue all the way through page 96 and then randomly pick back up at page 33. I spent 30 minutes reading when I realized that the chapter I was reading was not the correct one.
David Hoffman's report fits my experience of a lifetime of sharing news on the small town level and medium city level. It fits my experience even in a Fortune 500 company. Vale! David!
Only got this book because it was required for an English class, but I definitely don't regret this read. Eye-opener to the role of media in all cultures.
