Have you ever missed a step in the dark?
Miles is heartbroken. It took losing the woman he loved to discover just how much he loved her. And now there’s no way back. Or is there?
Returning to the wreckage of his relationship, Miles finds himself pursued by his ex, facing a much-anticipated reconciliation. But all is not what it seems as Miles plunges back into the life he ran away from.
Soon Dreams blur into reality. Nightmares stalk him awake. Is Miles losing his grip on reality? Or is there something more sinister at work? Something inexplicable. Something dark, malevolent and intent on revenge. Treading dark trails, Miles is going to discover what comes after love. And he’s not going to like it.
Afterlove is a 6,000 word short story originally published in Pill Hill Press's Dark Things anthology series.
Afterlove A Short Story edition by Tomas Furby Paranormal Romance eBooks
Afterlove is an unusual story about what happens to Miles' life after he breaks up with Emily. Miles goes on vacation and realizes that he still loves his ex-girlfriend, just as she, apparently, still loves him. He receives a series of text messages from Emily that lead him to believe that she still has feelings for him. When Miles returns home, odd things start happening in his life and the reader is left wondering what is reality and what isn't.Tomas Furby has written a very tight, well-paced short story. The characters are minimally drawn, which is perfect for this tale because the whole thing is designed to leave the reader wondering. The language and grammar are excellent. Furby makes excellent use of grammar to build up the tension and confusion in the protagonist, Miles. The diction is great and Furby uses some very good imagery that is highly appropriate to the story. The diction is British English, but non-Brits will not have any problems following the story.
Afterlove is a very quick read. It is difficult to place it in a genre. It is definitely not a straight-forward break up/romance story. Tomas Furby has said that he is influenced by Neil Gaiman and this would be a good place to start if this story needed a genre classification.
Afterlove is a story that will leave the reader wondering and guessing and wondering some more and probably considering reading it one more time.
